About this course

Using West Dean College and Gardens as inspiration, explore the exciting possibilities of drawing with ink. Work on a variety of papers and experiment with different techniques. Please note that Gary Goodman will now teach this course rather than Freya Pocklington.

Course Description

The course will begin with short exercises after which you will make a sketchbook/artist book. You will be taught how to develop a range of techniques and how to create atmosphere, depth and tone. You will also learn traditional techniques alongside more innovative methods.

By the end of the course you will have gained confidence in a range of drawing techniques and be able to use different materials together. You will have produced a large body of work consisting of short experiments and a beautiful book.


Arrival Day - this is the first date listed above

Courses start early evening. Residential students to arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm.

6.45pm: Welcome, followed by dinner (included).

8 - 9pm: First teaching session, attendance is essential.

Daily timetable

Classes 9.15 - 5pm, lunch is included.

From 6.30pm: Dinner (included for residential students).

Evening working - students may have access to workshops, but only with their tutor's permission and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.

Last day

Classes 9.15am - 3pm, lunch is included.

Residential students are to vacate their rooms by 10am please.

Course Materials


  • Some materials (charcoal, A2 paper, rubber) shared amongst the group for the first evening session.

What students need to bring

  • A range of collage material including textured or patterned paper or wallpaper etc.
  • Watercolours, pastels in different colours and any other materials you might like to use with inks

Available to buy

  • 10 sheets of A1 white cartridge paper
  • Fine black ink pen (waterproof)
  • Winsor and Newton inks (black, yellow, green, blue, brown and red)
  • Conte Carre Crayon HB black hard pastel
  • White hard pastel (not chalk)
  • A range of brushes (one for small detail and a few larger ones for washes)
  • Compressed charcoal
  • Rubber


Gary Goodman

Gary Goodman is an internationally renowned visual artist and poet. He has taught in various universities, colleges and other institutions since 1987, and has exhibited and read his poems in many places around the world. His artwork is featured in many publications and his poems published in a variety of anthologies.
