Wood engraving with added colour with Robin Mackenzie

Ref: SLW29493

About this course

An opportunity to develop skills in wood engraving, with the addition of colour from lino blocks.

Course Description

This course is suitable for beginners or those with previous experience of wood engraving. You will be shown a variety of techniques and be guided though the process to create you own wood engraved prints. Methods of printing will be covered, and you will print by hand and using an Albion press. Once you have created a design in black and white, you will have the opportunity to add colour to the design from separate lino blocks.

The first evening will be spent putting wood engraving into context as a medium and beginning to engrave some initial exercises. Over the next three days, you will first develop a small black and white engraving to experiment with tone and form, before moving onto a larger block which will allow for the addition of colour. You will be able to work on designs that you have brought with you or develop them during the course, with guidance in composition and draughtsmanship.

You will be shown how to print successfully from both the wood engraving blocks and lino blocks. Correct techniques of registration will also be explored. Two wood blocks and two lino blocks will be available for you but you may wish to bring more, or blocks you have previously worked on.
