About this course

This is a lo-fi technique that recycles tetrapack cartons to make beautiful intaglio style prints. You will be introduced to the technique, make a test print and go on to explore your own ideas.

Course Description

On this practical course, you will be introduced to a lo-fi printmaking technique which recycles tetrapack cartons into intaglio printing plates. Marks, lines and areas of tone can be made using an etching needle, craft knife and other tools. You will be introduced to the notion of intaglio print and how to think about and work an image onto a printing plate, taking it through to print. In addition, this ‘found’ material has an interesting character of its own and you will be encouraged to make use of the folds, marks and shapes offered up by the cartons to both inspire and become part of the finished prints.

You will start by making a test plate and ink it up to put through the press. This way, you can get to know the medium and experiment with the kinds of marks that you want to make whilst generating ideas to develop your own images.

You will be using oil-based printing inks to preserve the life of the plates so please wear old clothes or bring an apron. Gloves and cleaning materials will be supplied.

Your tutor will support you with demonstrations, examples and conversation in support of your developing ideas.

Course Materials

Included

  • On this course, the College will supply most of the materials including two tetrapack cartons, black ink, proofing paper for prints, good quality paper for finished prints, gloves and cleaning materials.

What students need to bring

  • Please bring washed out and flattened out supplimentary tetrapack cartons if you have them.
  • Images, drawings, ideas or reference material for the content of your prints
  • You will be using oil-based printing inks to preserve the life of the plates so please wear old clothes or bring an apron

Additional information

Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes). There may be possible equipment restrictions in tutor absence.

Jane Fox

Jane has an MA in Contemporary Visual Art from Falmouth College of Arts. An experienced facilitator, she has worked with Carnival Collective, Rocket Artists and Fine Art Printmaking students at the University of Brighton. Jane has exhibited in London, the Southeast and internationally and is a director at East Side Print, Brighton.
