This course goes beyond the basics taught on the beginners' course, ‘Making marbled papers’, which the tutor teaches at the College. If you haven't attended this course previously, you will need some experience of paper marbling.
You will use your skills and knowledge to make more complicated patterns, and to use these patterns to enable you to design patterns of your own and to enhance the skills required to replicate colours and patterns consistently. The weekend will start with a re-cap of the set-up procedures and basic patterns required to make a range of marbled papers. The second day will focus on marbling on fabrics, wood, leather, vellum, clay, books and any other materials that are available.
The course has the flexibility for you to work with guidance on materials and projects of your own. There is no obligation to use any of the materials that you do not wish to.
Particular focus will be put upon the trouble shooting of common issues in marbling, and colour and pattern matching.
Oversized A4 sized trays will be used, along with other larger trays to work on, and it is intended that everyone will get as much opportunity to use a large tray (70cm x 50cm) as possible throughout the two days.
The first evening session will be used to prepare the caragheenan size, ready for using the next day, and to go over marbling processes to act as a reminder to participants.
The course will be taught with a mixture of demonstrations and group discussions, but will mainly involve hands on time producing a range of marbled items to take away.

Courses start early evening. Residential students to arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm.
6.45pm: Welcome, followed by dinner (included).
8 - 9pm: First teaching session, attendance is essential.
Daily timetable
Classes 9.15 - 5pm, lunch is included.
From 6.30pm: Dinner (included for residential students).
Evening working - students may have access to workshops until 9pm, but only with their tutor's permission and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.
Last day
Classes 9.15am - 3pm, lunch is included.
Residential students are to vacate their rooms by 10am please.

Louise originally trained and worked as a Secondary School Science Teacher. After juggling full-time teaching with working for the family bookbinding business something had to give, so she left education and now works full-time with her husband Stuart. A long time admirer of marbled paper she took several courses which started an interest in this amazing and satisfying craft.
