About this course

Creatively explore and identify themes and approaches in your painting. Work towards a personal knowledge of your subject to increase your familiarity and expression. Explore materials, scale and techniques to create more considered works.

Course Description

Develop and focus your work and ideas using your primary studies, sketches and observations. Referring to your sketchbook and the four finished pieces you have brought along to the course, you will work from these as the basis for your creative development.

This course begins with an initial collaborative practical session.

You will then show work you have brought along, discuss and consider furthering your creative practice. This will include practical work and both group and individual tutorials in order to promote your individual and independent working process. You will be encouraged to explore materials, scale and techniques to aid in enhancing your skills. You will also develop strategies that use drawing as the basis for creating more considered and consolidated work.

The tutor introduces artists to support your development such as Pablo Picasso, Anselm Kiefer and others, who returned over-and-over to a theme or subject matter, constantly working closer to an intimate involvement and knowledge of the subject so that the familiarity allowed more freedom of expression.

You will receive guidance and suggestion to aid in identifying relevant subject matter to push forward and expand your own personal language.

At the end of the course, you will have individually and independently advanced your initial findings into a finished body of work. You will also have gained clarity on how to plan and further your chosen theme, and approach, to create more consolidated and considered works. You will leave with strategies and ideas on how to further develop your creative process.
