About this course

Learn to make an individual pair of Christmas earrings from silver sheet, curving and shaping the metal to create snowflakes, angels, stars or Christmas trees.

Course Description

If you are interested in making jewellery and would like to make yourself or a friend an unusual and individual pair of Christmas earrings, then you will enjoy this one day course.

Using the theme of Christmas, you will learn to saw out snowflakes, angels, stars, or Christmas trees in silver. You can then curve or shape or decorate them with texture before attaching the earring finding. You may choose for the pair of earrings to be the same design, or follow the current fashion and make each earring different. Through this project you will be introduced to some of the basic tools and processes of making jewellery including sawing, filing, soldering, shaping, texturing and polishing which will inspire you to want to learn more about this fascinating discipline.


Timetable for one day courses

Students should arrive by 9am for registration.

Classes are from 9.15 - 5pm

Lunch is included.

Course Materials


  • Silver and consumables (solder, abrasives, etc)

What students need to bring

  • An apron
  • Shoes that cover your feet (no sandals or flip flops or high heels)
  • Something to tie your hair back with, if it is long

  • Silver can be purchased from the College Shop which stocks a range of sheet, wire, rod, tube and findings. These will be available in set sizes and lengths suitable for a wide range of projects.
Please note: You do need to have good eyesight for this project or have magnifying glasses enabling you to focus close up.


Sarah Macrae

Sarah graduated Brighton Polytechnic in 1981 and has combined her studio practice as a jeweller with teaching part time. A member of The Designer Jewellers Group, she has exhibited at the Barbican Arts Centre (London) for the last twenty eight years. In 2000 Sarah was invited to write an introduction to Jewellery for Crowood Press and she features in several youtube videos. Sarah's work can be seen on Facebook and Instagram.
