About this course

This intensive course focuses on preparing for disaster response and salvage. The course uses experience of responding to real incidents to demonstrate how planning can minimise the impact of emergencies in libraries and archives as well as outlining the practical steps to take when responding to situations. With reference to case studies, the course includes strategies for dealing with damage, an emergency decision-making exercise and a major incident desktop scenario. By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
Identify the key issues that a disaster plan needs to address
Give examples of the decisions to be made when responding to an incident
Source salvage equipment to build a disaster kit

Course Description

During the course you will learn:
Emergency planning essentials – definitions, emergency teams, scope. 
Effective incident response.
Emergency plans – key contents checklist. 
Emergency teams, disaster kit contents, priority lists, floor plans and other key documents. 
Health and safety - risk assessments. 
Salvage tactics and methods. 
Managing major incidents and experience a major incident desktop exercise 

Timetable

Timetable for one day courses held at the British Library in London.

Students should arrive by 9.30am for registration.

Classes are from 9.30 - 4.30pm.

A working lunch in the Foyle Room is included.

Tutors

Emma Dadson

Emma Dadson is the Priority User Service Divisional Manager of Harwell Document Restoration, the leading service provider of specialist salvage for paper in the UK and Ireland, and has twice been recognised as Business Continuity Consultant of the Year (2014 and 2007). She is also the author of Effective Emergency Planning for Libraries, Archives and Museums (Facet, 2013). Emma holds a Masters degree in Classics from Oxford University and is an accredited Disaster Recovery Specialist Restorer and Fellow of the British Damage Management Association.
