Course Description

This course will allow you to develop your skills in reduction linocut with the opportunity to experiment with mono-printed textures, brush marks and atmospheric effects.

This course is suitable for beginners or those with previous experience of linocut. You will be shown a variety of techniques and be guided though the process to create your own multi-layered reduction prints. Methods of printing will be covered, and you will print by hand and using an Albion press. Once you have created an initial design, you will undertake the exciting reduction process to create intricate layered effects and colour overlays, using both cutting and texturing techniques.

The first evening will be spent putting reduction linocut into context as a medium and beginning to cut some initial small blocks. Over the next four days, you will first develop a small two layer linocut to experiment with colour-layering before moving onto a larger block, which will allow for multiple layers and added textures. You will be able to work on designs that you have brought with you or develop them during the course, with guidance in composition and draftsmanship.

You will be shown how to print successfully by hand and using a press. Correct techniques of registration will also be explored. Three exercise blocks and two mounted lino blocks will be available for you, but you may wish to bring more or blocks you have previously worked on.

Courses start early evening. Residential students to arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm.

6.45pm: Welcome, followed by dinner (included).

8 - 9pm: First teaching session, attendance is essential.

Daily timetable

Classes 9.15 - 5pm, lunch is included.

From 6.30pm: Dinner (included for residential students).

Evening working - students may have access to workshops until 9pm, but only with their tutor's permission and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.

Last day

Classes 9.15am - 3pm, lunch is included.

Residential students are to vacate their rooms by 10am please.

Course Materials

Included

  • On this course, the College will supply most of the materials, including inks, three 75 x 75mm unmounted lino blocks, one 100 x 150mm mounted lino block and one 150 x 200mm mounted lino block, a small and large goat hair brush and some assorted printing papers.

What students need to bring

  • Possible design options consisting of drawings or photographs
  • Sketchbook
  • Your own tools if you have them

Additional information

Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes). Possible equipment restrictions in tutor absence.
