Jane's designs concentrate on function, form, texture, shape and colour. Sculptural shapes and clean lines with striking colour combinations are individual to each design often mixing textured leathers printed and plain to enhance the shape of the bag. Attention to detail in the closing of the bag using decorative or functional handmade toggles and fastenings are key elements in the design process. Her designs cross a varied spectrum from beautiful sculptured evening bags to the more fluid soft organic shapes for every day. Sumptuous hides printed and plain leathers are just some of the textures used to create a range of diverse designs that are perfect for daytime, weddings and special occasions.
Jane creates work that contains a narrative using a photomontage of images from different sources. They contain a mixture of found and her own photographic or hand drawn images. This library of iconography is constantly being re-used and manipulated through different media. The use of texture, colour and layering is central to her work. She set up Inkspot Press in Brighton, an open access facility dedicated to silkscreen and letterpress.
Jane Sedgwick makes bold, playful wooden jewellery which she hand turns and hand paints in her studio near the North Norfolk Coast. Working with geometric forms, repetition and colour, her inspiration comes from a variety of sources especially classic educational toys and nautical imagery. Jane uses traditional woodworking techniques and manages a small woodland which provides a sustainable supply of sycamore for her work.
Jeff's work reflects equally a love of creatures, great and small and a love of wood. His earlier training as an artist and later as a toymaker has led to objects which can be seen as playful sculpture or perhaps sculptural toys. Jeff tries to express the essential nature of the creatures he makes, sometimes by simplification, sometimes by detail and very often by the sinuous movement achieved by the technique of articulation.
