About this course

Choose to make two of the three projects on offer: a secateur pocket, a scissor sheath or a knife sheath, using traditional leather working hand tools and techniques.

Course Description

On this two-day workshop, you will have the choice to make two pieces from the three options on offer: the pre-moulded secateur pocket made to handily hang from a belt; the scissor sheath, which will be made using a template and is suitable for various sizes; and the knife sheath for which you will first make the pattern to ensure that it snuggly fits your favourite knife. Don’t forget to bring your own scissors and knife along to the course.

Working alongside you, Jeremy and Carla will demonstrate each step and process, and the traditional hand tools and techniques to complete them. This will include:

• pattern making

• using a template

• marking out the leather

• cutting out the leather

• marking out for punch holes

• punching stitch holes

• hand stitching

• finishing edges

• riveting and press stud fixing

They will also demonstrate how they make the pre-moulded section for the secateur pocket.

Please note: some strength in your hands is needed for working with leather.

Timetable

Arrival Day - this is the first date listed above

Courses start early evening. Residential students to arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm.

6.45pm: Welcome, followed by dinner (included).

8 - 9pm: First teaching session, attendance is essential.

Daily timetable

Classes 9.15 - 5pm, lunch is included.

From 6.30pm: Dinner (included for residential students).

Evening working - students may have access to workshops until 9pm, but only with their tutor's permission and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.

Last day

Classes 9.15am - 3pm, lunch is included.

Residential students are to vacate their rooms by 10am please.

Course Materials

Included

  • On this course, the tutor will supply most of the materials, including leather and sundries for the two projects you choose to make from the list above, with use of the tutors’ specialised tools and equipment.

What students need to bring

  • The knife and scissors you would like to make a sheath for
  • Notebook and pencil

Additional information

Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes). Possible equipment restrictions in tutor absence.

Tutors

Jeremy and Carla Bonner

Jeremy and Carla Bonner established Bonner Leather Studio in 2014 just outside Cirencester, where they work together. Jeremy graduated from Birmingham School of Art and Carla graduated from Newcastle on Tyne Polytechnic.
