On this practical course, you will start with walking as a way to connect with and travel about the environment along the paths and throughways at West Dean. Engaging with ideas of marking, trace and imprint as we move through the grounds of the college on an approximately four mile walk with guided activities, you will be drawing, collecting, sharing and generating ideas through a printmaking lens.
On return to the studio, you will be introduced to and supported to explore blind emboss and gelatine printing plates as two print-based ways to process and build on information collected, remembered or imagined whilst walking, making experimental prints on a variety of papers. Gelatine plates have a sensitive surface that can be worked upon to make monoprints, whilst blind emboss is an intaglio process from which both imprints and multiples can be made. You will be able to make test prints on paper, building up a series as you develop your image-based ideas.
Your tutor will support you with demonstrations, examples, and conversation in support of your learning the techniques and developing your prints through the media on offer, sharing inspirations and the work of other artists along the way.

Courses start early evening. Residential students to arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm.
6.45pm: Welcome, followed by dinner (included).
8 - 9pm: First teaching session, attendance is essential.
Daily timetable
Classes 9.15 - 5pm, lunch is included.
From 6.30pm: Dinner (included for residential students).
Evening working - students may have access to workshops until 9pm, but only with their tutor's permission and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.
Last day
Classes 9.15am - 3pm, lunch is included.
Residential students are to vacate their rooms by 10am please.

Jane has an MA in Contemporary Visual Art from Falmouth College of Arts. An experienced facilitator, she has worked with Carnival Collective, Rocket Artists and Fine Art Printmaking students at the University of Brighton. Jane has exhibited in London, the Southeast and internationally and is a director at East Side Print, Brighton.
