About this course

Starting with walking as a way to engage with ideas of marking, trace and imprint as you move about the environment, this will be followed by time in the studio for further explorations using printmaking techniques of blind embossing and gelatine plates.

Course Description

On this practical course, you will start with walking as a way to connect with and travel about the environment along the paths and throughways at West Dean. Engaging with ideas of marking, trace and imprint as we move through the grounds of the college on an approximately four mile walk with guided activities, you will be drawing, collecting, sharing and generating ideas through a printmaking lens.

On return to the studio, you will be introduced to and supported to explore blind emboss and gelatine printing plates as two print-based ways to process and build on information collected, remembered or imagined whilst walking, making experimental prints on a variety of papers. Gelatine plates have a sensitive surface that can be worked upon to make monoprints, whilst blind emboss is an intaglio process from which both imprints and multiples can be made. You will be able to make test prints on paper, building up a series as you develop your image-based ideas.

Your tutor will support you with demonstrations, examples, and conversation in support of your learning the techniques and developing your prints through the media on offer, sharing inspirations and the work of other artists along the way.

‘All things are engaged in writing their history……Not a foot steps into the snow, or along the ground but prints in characters more or less lasting, a map of its march. The ground is all memoranda and signatures; and every object covered over with hints.’ Ralph Waldo Emerson
