About this course

Discover the experimental monotype process using mark-making tools, painting techniques and acetate stencils to produce prints with unique surface qualities. Learn how to use a roller press and produce prints by hand.

Course Description

Monotypes are a spontaneous and exciting way to make images. On this course, you will learn how to use plexiglass plates and washable oil-based inks to create multiple prints with painterly qualities and unique textures.

You will initially explore mark-making with a variety of tools, brayers and recycled materials, and you will be encouraged to be curious and investigative in your approach. You will be introduced to painting and mark-making techniques using a modified oil and the additive or reductive approach, and you will produce a series of small test prints exploring the potential of the medium.

Your tutor will explain the potential variables, pitfalls and different printing methods, and she will demonstrate how to print by hand and use a roller press. You will be able to compare printing methods using both heavyweight paper and wet strength tissue, and learn how to register a plate.

As you gain confidence in your approach, you will have the opportunity to further develop your work by making different format prints (up to A4 size) and incorporate acetate stencils with subtle textures, which will produce unique surface qualities.

The course is designed for both beginners and for those who have some knowledge of printmaking and would like to extend their understanding of painterly prints and the monotype process. It is particularly suited to those who are interested in expressive and abstract mark-making, layering and surface textures.

By the end of the course, you will have gained confidence in your printmaking skills through experimentation and will take with you several test prints, collage materials and more resolved outcomes.

Course Materials

Included

  • On this course, the college will supply most of the materials, including Plexiglass plate, Caligo Safewash relief inks, Caligo Safewash Oil (to thin and dilute inks), A4 acetate (two sheets each), blotting paper, paper (heavyweight cartridge and wet strength tissue paper) and gloves.

What students need to bring

  • Sketches or images to use as inspiration for your prints (can be colour or black and white)
  • An apron or old shirt to protect your clothes
  • Extra brushes and mark-making tools if you have them (e.g. paintbrushes, cotton buds, bamboo skewers, rags)
  • Low relief textured materials that you don’t mind getting ink on, such as net fruit bags, string, textured papers or corrugated card, doilies, lace and natural things such as leaves or feathers (no metal or hard plastic)
  • The tutor will also provide some mark-making tools and textured materials (cotton buds, card offcuts, colour shapers, brushes, rags, tapes, foliage, etc.)

Additional information

Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes). Possible equipment restrictions in tutor absence.

May Everett is a printmaker and painter based in Sussex. She is a fully qualified teacher with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art and a Masters Level 7 PGCE in Post-Compulsory Art & Design.
