This course is intended to introduce knife cut marquetry and the aim is to create a decorated wall clock that you can take home to enjoy.
Everything will be provided, including the clock movement and hands. You will learn how to use a scalpel to cut coloured and natural wood veneers using templates, and then you will assemble them to create a design. You will also learn how to glue this design onto a backing board, then sand and smooth the veneers, ready for finishing.
The morning session starts with a safety briefing and an introductory talk by the tutor, who will demonstrate the technique and show some examples of what can be done. This will be followed by some practice exercises to get the feel of the tools and materials. Due to time constraints, it will only be possible to create a very simple design. Some of the marquetry pieces can be shaded with hot sand to create a three-dimensional effect.
In the afternoon, you will glue these designs onto a prepared board, sand and clean up the panel, apply a basic finish and assemble the clock – which should show that it is time for tea.
Please note that you need to be able to hold a scalpel, and use it steadily and with control, to cut the veneers.
