Salon Imaginaire #7 - Diane Cluck and Ichi

The Old Library, West Dean College

Pay what you decide, Open to all age 12+

Join us at this evening event which celebrates Song as an ecstatic ritual marriage between text and music.

Diane Cluck is an American singer-songwriter who contributed to New York's burgeoning 'Antifolk' scene in the early 2000s. Since then, singer-songwriters Laura Marling, Florence Welch, and Sharon Van Etten have all cited Diane as a major influence. She tours the US, UK and Europe, employing singing as a healing, textural experience, and her vocal style is characterised by a clipped, glottal beauty.

Ichi is a musician from Nagoya in Japan who takes the notion of a one-man band to new limits, combining his quirky handmade instrument inventions (Stilt-bass, Kalilaphone, Balloon-pipes, Hatboxpedal-drum, Tapumpet, Percussion-shoes & Hat-trick-hat) with steel-drum, ping-pong balls, toys and everyday objects.

Doors open at 7.30pm. Music starts at 8pm. The Steward's Bar will be open until 10.30pm.

Open to all age 12+. This is a Pay What You Decide event. Please register to book your seat.

Diane Cluck

Diane Cluck's music is a truly dazzling force - prepare to be transported. Her songwriting evokes entire symbolic landscapes in which audiences can wander, ponder or simply be and the curious intensity of her performances is legendary on live music circuits, both here and in the US.

Recent broadcasts include a 25th anniversary show for iconic WNYC radio show 'Spinning on Air', where she shared the bill with Yoko Ono and John Zorn. Photo credit: Samuel Lang Budin.

"Bell-clear and hotly austere, her lithe, dynamic voice hasn't much kin. Categorizing her as folk is
simplistic. (Cluck) emanates something humble but mythic. Appalachia or ancient Athens?" Time Out New York

"A brilliant idiosyncratic guitarist, a witty and wise lyricist, an imaginative melody writer with a
powerful voice; her dark and introspective tunes are utterly captivating. Watch her spellbind the
room." Village Voice, NYC

To see Ichi live is to witness something so playful and unusual you know that you're experiencing something entirely new. It's fun, it's danceable, it's exciting. Having toured as a solo artist in Japan, Europe, and the UK, ICHI's music has been championed by the likes of David Byrne and Deerhoof, who recently asked him to play with them in New York at their event 'The Wordless Music' series.

"What on earth is this?! It's brilliant!" Steve Lamacq, BBC Radio 6

"Hilarious and bonkers!" Lauren Laverne, BBC Radio 6
