West Dean College Summer Show 2019

Press Release: Dates announced for week-long School of Arts Summer Show

The Summer Show will also travel to Margate for a week-long exhibition

The hugely-popular West Dean School of Arts Summer Show will be open to the public from Saturday, July 6 to Friday, July 12, 2019 between 10am - 5pm in the Edward James Studios at West Dean College of Arts and Conservation (use Gardens entrance). A Preview will be held on Friday, July 5, between 5-8pm and is open to the public. This will be followed later in July by an exhibition of the student's work in Margate - in a new exhibition space yards from Turner Contemporary.

The West Dean Summer Show 2019 will showcase original work by emerging artists studying for their Diploma in Art and Contemporary Crafts, Graduate Diploma in Visual Arts and Master of Arts (MFA) postgraduate degree qualifications. The free exhibition, held in the College's Edward James Studios, will display a diverse range of practices including sculpture, installation, print, painting, video, ceramics, and textiles.

Alison Baxter, Head of School of Arts, comments, "West Dean College of Arts and Conservation is renowned for its Visual Arts programmes, with graduates going on to exhibit internationally. The department's ethos of encouraging diverse interdisciplinary practice, together with its support of specialist subjects, attracts students interested in radical approaches to art and those with a strong emphasis on studio practice and making. Exceptionally large studios, excellent facilities, and an outstanding student/staff ratio ensure students are supported to challenge themselves and push the boundaries of contemporary fine art practice."

SEE - WEST DEAN VISUAL ARTS IN MARGATE 20-28 JULY 2019

Each year the work of the Visual Arts students goes on tour - last year it was to Shoreditch and the heart of vibrant East London, and this year, a selection of work from the full-time Visual Art students at West Dean College will be exhibited in Margate (Kent) at Artgame, an independent gallery just a short walk from Turner Contemporary between Saturday, July 20 - Sunday, July 28, 2019. The Free exhibition will be open 11am - 5pm each day, with a preview on July 20 between 2-4pm, when there will be an opportunity to meet the artists.

As Dr David Stent, Visual Arts Subject Leader, explains: "Each year we like to take the work of the Visual Arts students to a new and exciting venue, and this year we're staging a show in Margate for the first time. It's a fascinating town with a rich history and a growing art scene that includes spaces like Pie Factory, alternative sites for education like Open School East, and Turner Contemporary, which of course hosts the 2019 Turner Prize in September"

The exhibition will showcase the work of students graduating from the full-time Visual Arts programmes, including Graduate Diploma and MFA postgraduate degrees, as well as interim exhibitions by first year MFA students. Exhibiting students will present work developed over a year of intensive study, providing visitors with the opportunity to view original work by a group of emerging artists.
