Michelle Mateo

Michelle is an ash splint basket maker and pole-lathe bowl turner, who is largely self-taught, learning to weave her first basket eight years ago. She is proud to announce that she is the 1st prize winner, traditional category, of The Worshipful Basketmakers Company 2022 basketry competition.

Describe your approach to teaching
My approach to teaching is a logical step-by-step process, with visual diagrams and demonstrations to supplement your direct learning. You will quickly learn the capabilities and limits of working with ash through tactile use.

What inspires your own work?
I am inspired by the natural environment and learning about traditional techniques that have been passed on from generation to generation. I hope to reconnect people, with local resources and to improve mental health.
