Arnaud Giral completed his violin making studies at the Newark School of Violin Making in 2004. He then moved to Montpellier, in the south of France, where he focused on viols and baroque violin making. Arnaud began his own research into the original set-up of bowed string instruments, which led him to visit many museums and private collections in Europe. After setting up his workshop in Paris in 2009, he continued his research into historical stringed instruments and produced numerous copies of violins, violas, cellos and viols from the early 17th to the early 19th century, with particular attention to historical stringing and set-up.
His dedicated approach to historical instruments and his attention to gut strings has led him to work for numerous specialist musicians and renowned early music ensembles, he has also received commissions work from Paris Philharmonic (Cité de la Musique) and the Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique in Paris.
His aim is to create instruments for today's musicians with a historically informed approach, considering modern technologies and research on varnish or acoustics.
