Jason makes crisp, contemporary windsor chairs from a small one-man workshop in Lewes. His chairs are both utilitarian and sculptural, whilst embodying traditional methods and using locally sourced materials. Jason uses a pole-lathe to turn legs and spindles from green ash logs, the seats are hand-carved using the adze and travisher, and many parts are steamed and bent. He paints the chairs black to enhance their graceful silhouette.
James Dougall is a multi award winning silversmith who takes an unconventional approach to mixing different materials with silver. His latest work sees him working with specially cast glass to extraordinary effect transforming what could otherwise be straightforward objects into something very fresh and new.
James is a blacksmith and designer specialising in hot forged contemporary metal work. Working for a wide range of clients from architects and commissioners to private individuals, his work is equally diverse ranging from larger scale public art to smaller interior pieces. James is interested in creating a new narrative within the language of blacksmithing, moving away from the traditional patterns and scrollwork designs, to work that has a contemporary relevance to today's built environment. Whilst he finds huge inspiration in the traditional construction and fixing methods that feature so strongly in the blacksmith’s craft, James seeks to combine these traditions with contemporary design and modern metalwork practice to create work that is firmly rooted in the present.
The elusive nature of memory and its relationship to matter lies at the heart of Fox’s practice. Discrepant materials, ‘found’ texts, images and objects are shaken down, sifted and rearranged in pursuit of the mutter from which stories can be told. Prints and drawings form series of paper-based activity that explore and weave about a larger, interdisciplinary body of work. A member of InkSpot Press, Rocket Artists and Phoenix, Brighton, Fox is also Senior Lecturer on Fine Art Printmaking at The University of Brighton.
