Angelika initially trained as an historian and uses her knowledge of art history as a rich source for inspiration. Unlike a milliner, she forms the shapes of the hat from pieces of fabric, which emerge from the structural qualities of the materials rather than from a block. Her work as a costume designer in the theatre often leads to ideas that she can translate into her hat designs and vice versa.
Anne studied at West Surrey College of Art and London College of Fashion. She co-founded the Bailey Tomlin label in 1989 designing hats for the UK, USA and Japan. Now working under her own name and away from the hectic world of fashion, Anne is focusing on her love of wild flowers and bees and their symbiotic relationship, making pieces ranging from beaded brooches to miniature worlds of wild flowers.
Anne makes sinuous, seductive contemporary silver jewellery, inspired by the natural world. Design is carried out directly in metal rather than on the page. Each piece is hand-hammered using the technique of anticlastic raising, which gives light, strong, easy-to-wear forms. Many designs feature hammered texture; some have integral pins, catches or loops. Both inner and outer surfaces are displayed; some inner surfaces are gilded for contrast.
Annie’s jewellery is inspired by natural organic shapes found in marine life and geology. The latest collection juxtaposes open and closed forms offsetting smooth matt gold and silver flat surfaces with hollow polished edged elements. Precious stones and beads have been incorporated within her collections to enhance the sculptural forms with colour. In all of her work there is a strong emphasis on three dimensionality of design.
