Trees have become Andrea’s passion and she loves to photograph them in any season. In autumn, however, she feels they are perhaps at their most photogenic. You may use a camera device of your own choosing to capture them in the context of the landscape and learn to document them in detail. Cameras can include DSLR or compact cameras, ipads or iphones.
As you explore the Gardens and Arboretum with Andrea – photographer for the book ‘At West Dean’ – observing the trees and focusing your lenses on structure, shape and form, you will also look in detail at the various bark, fruits and autumn foliage, paying particular attention to composition, colour and light.
Weather depending, the group will be encouraged to take advantage of the ‘golden hours’ by venturing out pre-breakfast for an outdoor photography session to capture first light, and there will also be an opportunity to continue during the afternoon.
Between the outdoor sessions, you will be encouraged to download image files in the College’s photographic suite or using your own laptops. Andrea will then guide you in how to use some essential, simple digital post production techniques in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.
There will be a final critique session where you will be encouraged to share your top images with the group and learn individually from Andrea’s photographic experience in the publishing world.

Courses start early evening. Residential students to arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm.
6.45pm: Welcome, followed by dinner (included).
8 - 9pm: First teaching session, attendance is essential.
Daily timetable
Classes 9.15 - 5pm, lunch is included.
From 6.30pm: Dinner (included for residential students).
Evening working - students may have access to workshops until 9pm, but only with their tutor's permission and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.
Last day
Classes 9.15am - 3pm, lunch is included.
Residential students are to vacate their rooms by 10am please.

Andrea studied photography in the South of England. She started her commercial career by buying and selling cameras such as Leicas and Hasselblads, then worked with Dr Jane Goodall in Africa on wildlife projects. These experiences contributed to a diverse range of photographic skills. A spell with fine art photographer Bruce Rae in London sharpened her attention to the subtleties of light.
