About this course

Over the weekend, you will learn everything you need to know to create your own handmade quilt. You will be guided through the cutting, patchwork, quilting and finishing processes, and you will practise all the necessary skills by making your own small sample.

Course Description

Over the weekend, you will learn everything you need to know to create your own handmade quilt. You will be guided through the cutting and patchwork process for one of three traditional patterns (nine patch, rail fence or sash), and you will be introduced to improvisational patchwork.

You will then practise turning your patchwork sample into a small quilt (approximately 40cm x 40cm), by preparing the layers, basting and quilting. Before practising big stitch quilting using cotton sashiko thread and we will discuss other kinds of machine and hand quilting.

Finally, Lauren will show you how to trim and bind your quilt sample.

Timetable

Arrival Day - this is the first date listed above

Courses start early evening. Residential students to arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm.

6.45pm: Welcome, followed by dinner (included).

8 - 9pm: First teaching session, attendance is essential.

Daily timetable

Classes 9.15 - 5pm, lunch is included.

From 6.30pm: Dinner (included for residential students).

Evening working - students may have access to workshops until 9pm, but only with their tutor's permission and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.

Last day

Classes 9.15am - 3pm, lunch is included.

Residential students are to vacate their rooms by 10am please.

Course Materials

Included

  • Naturally-dyed fabric, cotton quilt wadding, with white sashiko thread for hand quilting, Sashiko needles and a thimble will be provided by the tutor. A spool of machine thread will also be supplied.

What students need to bring

  • Some sharp fabric scissors and pins
  • A rotary cutter, Hera marker/chalk if you have them (may also be borrowed)
  • Sewing machines are provided, but bring you own if you prefer to use it

Additional information

Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes). Possible equipment restrictions in tutor absence.
