About this course

This course is a short weekend with a timetable variation: 10am-5pm on Saturday and 9am-4pm on Sunday.

Experiment with how to use your iPad to draw and paint exciting landscape images. Using the Procreate app, you will explore, brushes, colour, layers, image manipulation of photographs, as well as how to respond to the landscape in different ways.

Course Description

Be inspired by David Hockney's transformative iPad drawings to try this digital art form for yourself. One of the most powerfully flexible apps on the iPad is Procreate, which for a little over £10 offers a vast array of digital brushes, pens, pencils, pastels and a huge amount of image manipulation capability. The tutor will guide you as you familiarise yourself with the software, to enable you to create confident digital drawings and paintings using your iPad and Procreate.

The course runs from Saturday 10am – 5pm and Sunday 9am -4pm and will introduce you to the Procreate interface. You will learn how to select different brushes and other drawing tools, change the brush size, opacity and the brush texture with the use of the Apple Pencil. You will explore the creation of layers, selections and look at the variety of image manipulation possibilities within the programme.

Your learning will focus on the creation of digital landscapes as you explore how line, contour and colour can create visual space. You will consider the use of line, tone and mark-making in drawings and paintings to produce a range of reponses to both the observed and the imagined landscape. You will consider scale, distance and perspective, as well as visual contrast, and you will look at a broad range of other artists’ interpretations of the landscape from a historical and contemporary context.

At the end of this course, you will have gained confidence in how to approach drawing and painting the landscape on the iPad and using the Procreate app, and you will have created a series of digital artworks to inspire you further.
