About this course

Create fused glass landscapes with powders, frits, stringers and sheet glass. Learn different layering, design and composition techniques working with 3mm and 6mm Bullseye glass. All technical aspects of glass fusing will also be covered.

Course Description

This course will give beginners and those with some glass fusing experience the opportunity to learn new techniques to create wonderful scenes in glass. The tutor will demonstrate different ways of working with Bullseye glass powders on a single glass sheet to stacking several layers and firing successfully in the kiln. You will learn the correct ways to add inclusions between pieces of glass, how to cut glass properly and how to manipulate glass stringers in the flame to add an extra dimension to your work.

You will get the chance to make at least three different projects creating landscapes and seascapes, with an emphasis on using simple hand tools and handmade stencils from paper.

With her background in Fine Art, the tutor will also discuss composition, colour and texture, and how to translate these elements successfully into glass.

You will leave this course with a thorough understanding of the technical aspects of successful glass fusing (including important handouts), new techniques for working with powders and frits, and be inspired to create beautiful glass art with basic tools and equipment. The tutor will share many tips, tricks and firing schedules she has learnt during her career as a glass artist.

Please note, you do not need to be able to draw or paint, as the tutor will teach you how to effectively use glass elements, creating stunning works of art.

Timetable

Arrival Day - this is the first date listed above

Courses start early evening. Residential students to arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm.

6.45pm: Welcome, followed by dinner (included).

8 - 9pm: First teaching session, attendance is essential.

Daily timetable

Classes 9.15 - 5pm, lunch is included.

From 6.30pm: Dinner (included for residential students).

Evening working - students may have access to workshops until 9pm, but only with their tutor's permission and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.

Last day

Classes 9.15am - 3pm, lunch is included.

Residential students are to vacate their rooms by 10am please.

Course Materials

Included

  • The course fee includes all materials and safety wear used in the glass projects. Please note, you will be restricted to size dimensions when working with sheet glass, due to kiln firing requirements.

What students need to bring

  • If you would like to bring any photographs, drawings, pictures of landscapes and seascapes to use as inspiration, please do so. Your tutor will supply a good selection of images and inspiration to work from.
  • If you have your own glass cutting tools and are happy to use them, please feel free to bring them (please make sure they are marked with your name).

  • We have a generously stocked craft shop, which opens daily from 8:30am–2pm.

Additional information

Please note – Finished work will be fired overnight and the final pieces will be held until they can be collected by you. Pieces from the last firing can be posted (if they are not too heavy) or can be collected later the following afternoon. Your work will be kept for collection for six months. If you are unable to arrange collection within this time, you may wish to consider booking an additional night’s accommodation to enable you to collect your work the following day, when the kiln has cooled. If you wish to have your work posted, please pay the postage cost before you leave. Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio. This includes stout covered footwear, i.e. no open-toes or sandals.

Claire Hall

Glass artist Claire Hall originally trained as a sculptor with a BA Hons in Fine Art and a PGCE in Art and Technology. She has been teaching her distinct style of glass fusing for the last ten years as a regular teacher at Warm Glass UK and in glass studios across Europe.
