About this course

Learn how to apply perspective to interior drawings and develop new ways of sketching. The fundamentals of one and two point perspective are covered through a series of drawing exercises. You will learn how to illustrate interiors and populate these with furniture and architectural details.

Course Description

This exciting two-day sketching course focuses on drawing interior spaces using perspective techniques. The fundamentals of one and two point perspective will be covered through a series of drawing exercises. You will learn how to illustrate interiors from different viewpoints and populate these spaces with furniture, accessories and architectural details.

The course aims to help you understand perspective drawing and apply techniques to create drawings that have depth and the appropriate proportion. Both drawing from the imagination and drawing from observation is incorporated into the learning process. Sketching will take place in the studio and observational exercises will be set within the inspiring interior architecture of West Dean.

Working with a range of drawing media, you will also be encouraged to find and develop your own unique style. The course is suitable for anyone interested in sketching interiors, from complete beginners to students seeking to develop their drawing skills further, and designers wanting to illustrate and express ideas.

By the end of the course, you will have produced a series of interior sketches using both one and two point perspective drawing techniques. You will have improved your ability to observe and draw interior spaces and, with the confidence gained, be able to apply this to your future drawings.

Timetable

Arrival Day - this is the first date listed above

Courses start early evening. Residential students to arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm.

6.45pm: Welcome, followed by dinner (included).

8 - 9pm: First teaching session, attendance is essential.

Daily timetable

Classes 9.15 - 5pm, lunch is included.

From 6.30pm: Dinner (included for residential students).

Evening working - students may have access to workshops until 9pm, but only with their tutor's permission and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.

Last day

Classes 9.15am - 3pm, lunch is included.

Residential students are to vacate their rooms by 10am please.

Course Materials

Included

  • On this course the College will supply most of the drawing materials you will need, including an A4 spiral bound sketchbook, loose sheets of A3 and A4 paper, A4 tracing paper, a variety of fineliner pens, pencils and a marker pen.

What students need to bring

  • Pencil sharpener
  • Eraser
  • OPTIONAL (not essential):
  • Any other drawing pens of choice, e.g. fine liners, fountain pens, biro, coloured fineliners, etc.
  • Coloured pencils
  • Further drawing pencils in other grades
  • Promarker or copic pen/s

Additional information

Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes). Comfortable footwear will also be important as we may be standing.

Natalie Arnold

Natalie Arnold is a multi-faceted artist, illustrator and designer. After graduating with a degree in Interior Architecture BA (Hons), she worked in the commercial design industry while continuing to practice her fine art.
