About this course

Increase your range of watercolour techniques and confidence in using them. From light hearted sketching to more developed watercolour painting, and playful experimentation to accurate detail.

Course Description

The course will start with some of the basic watercolour techniques, but quickly become more experimental. Initially working as a group, with an eye to help you move in your own direction, you will increase your understanding of the breadth of watercolour techniques and concentrate on the ones most appropriate to you.

Useful sketching methods will be covered to help you develop your ideas and compositions for more in-depth painting, all the while practising and improving your understanding of watercolour and its application.

You will use watercolour techniques to create the effects useful for the painting of landscape and to develop your personal painting style.

Over the duration of the course, you will become more confident in applying water and paint to improve your ongoing practice.

Timetable

Arrival Day - this is the first date listed above

Courses start early evening. Residential students to arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm.

6.45pm: Welcome, followed by dinner (included).

8 - 9pm: First teaching session, attendance is essential.

Daily timetable

Classes 9.15 - 5pm, lunch is included.

From 6.30pm: Dinner (included for residential students).

Evening working - students may have access to workshops until 9pm, but only with their tutor's permission and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.

Last day

Classes 9.15am - 3pm, lunch is included.

Residential students are to vacate their rooms by 10am please.

Course Materials

Included

  • On this course, the tutor will supply some materials required for techniques out of the normal range of watercolour materials, i.e. crayons.

What students need to bring

  • All watercolour materials and equipment that you use regularly (and any materials and equipment that you may wish to learn how to use)
  • Watercolour paints – pans and or tubes in a selection of colours that you may already have
  • A range of watercolour brushes – wash brush, fine round brush, rough hog hair brush, old toothbrush, old brushes, new brushes, in fact any brushes you may already have
  • Watercolour pads and sheets of watercolour paper – a range of quality and size
  • All materials can be discussed on the first evening and you can then buy appropriately, so please just bring along what you have.

Additional information

Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes).
