About this course

Picassiette mosaic is a term used to describe a style of mosaic art where broken ceramics are pieced together to create something new and beautiful.

Course Description

Recycling is intrinsic to Picassiette ‘tolen from Plate’, as the broken pieces can no longer be used but are repurposed to make something new and interesting. This philosophy is at the heart of my practice as I am always looking for ways to make art and crafts sustainable while retaining creativity and beauty.

Through this creative mosaic activity, you will develop ideas and artistic inspiration, and you will learn new skills and theories around the subject. You will explore how patterns, shape, and the use of a variety of materials influence your design

Practical tips will be given to boost and improve well-being and develop your creative confidence. You will be provided with an environment where you can flourish and your ideas can be realised. Or I have templates too: cat, beetle, bee, or flowers.

You will take your treasure home to keep forever.

Timetable for one day courses

Students should arrive by 9am for registration.

Classes are from 9.15 - 5pm

Lunch is included.

Course Materials

Included

  • On this course, the tutor will supply your slate background, an amazing range of upcycled tiles, patterned tiles (she makes these herself), mosaic materials and broken crockery.

What students need to bring

  • You might like to bring material to include in your mosaics, e.g. china plates with interesting patterns and borders, found fragments of pottery from beaches or river banks, or any other ceramic material or mosaic tiles that you might like to include in your work.

Additional information

Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio. This includes stout-covered footwear, i.e. no open-toes or sandals.

Julie Norburn

Julie Norburn

Julie Norburn is an established tutor with 25 years’ experience working with mosaic. It was through her painting and interest in colour and pattern, that moved her towards mosaic in the late 1980s. As a freelancer and with Art4Space, Julie has created work for numerous schools, housing estates, community centres and hospitals using ceramic and mosaic.
