Course Description

Come back and glaze pots you have made on one of our pottery courses and left behind for firing. These intense and rewarding glazing days are only for potters who have made work on previous pottery courses at the College. Please remember to leave at least four weeks after your making course before you book a glazing day to ensure your work has been biscuit fired by the pottery technician.

The day is limited to eight places and starts at 9.15am and finishes at 5pm. The main aim of the day is the application of glazes to pots or ceramic pieces.

You will be guided through the most efficient (which are often the easiest) techniques, and the tutor is on hand to support you through one-to-one tuition.

The following techniques will be taught:

1) Choosing the appropriate glaze for the clay and type of firing (electric or reduction gas kiln)

2) Waxing the foot rings and lids

3) Planning how to glaze a pot or ceramic piece

4) Pouring and dipping

5) Use of glazing tongs

6) Wax resist, and double dipping

7) Spraying (where appropriate)

8) Touching up finger marks and preparing for firing

9) Decorating with colouring oxides, ceramic under and over glaze colours

All glazing materials and basic tools are provided for this course.

Classes are from 9.15 - 5pm

Additional information

Please note: once your work has been glazed and re-fired, it will be available for collection within six months. Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio. This includes stout covered footwear, i.e. no open-toes or sandals, and safety boots, if specified.

Alison Sandeman

Alison Sandeman is a long-standing tutor at West Dean. She makes functional individual pieces in stoneware, porcelain and Raku. She has a special interest in outdoor firing techniques.
