Whether you are a newcomer to botanical art or whether you wish to try the wet-in-wet watercolour technique, this course will take you through the different steps of painting a rose with demonstrations at every stage.
The aims of the course are:
- to improve your confidence in botanical drawing and painting
- to improve your skills in watercolour techniques
- to develop your knowledge and understanding of colours and colour-mixing theory
- to enable you to use light and shadows to paint three-dimensional looking subjects
The course will include some step-by-step demonstrations of the process, showing you how to start a drawing, how much detail to include, how to trace and transfer a drawing, painting a quick tonal study, choosing your colours depending on the subject, painting shadows, using the wet-in-wet technique for smooth washes and adding dry brush details to finish the painting. There will also be some individual advice in between demonstrations.
By the end of the course, you will have produced a tonal sketch and a finished painting of a single rose.
Some of the plants will come from the West Dean Gardens and some from the florist. You are also welcome to bring a rose with you if you wish to paint a particular subject.
Timetable for one day courses
Students should arrive by 9am for registration.
Classes are from 9.15 - 5pm
