This one-week course introduces students to the core skills needed to work with both AutoCAD and SketchUp computer programmes.

Course Description

This informative one-week course will introduce you to the core skills needed to work with both AutoCAD and SketchUp computer programmes.

Strong emphasis is placed on best practices and approaches are derived from experience and working solutions. Step-by-step progress is made under the close supervision of our tutors. You will spend the first half of the week learning to draw accurately in 2D CAD, and the plan created during AutoCAD training will become the basis for a 3D drawing as you move on to study SketchUp.

Days One, Two and Three – AutoCAD

AutoCAD is a powerful programme which allows designers and architects to create 2D and 3D computer aided designs. The first three days of this course are intended to familiarise you with the different 2D tools available and to teach you the foundations of the software. Our experienced tutors will introduce you to the core skills of the program; taking you from complete beginners, to a level where you can be confident in your ability to generate and work with accurate scale plans and visuals.

This course is open to applicants with basic technical drawing skills and intermediate computer literacy. Using hands on exercises, you will learn features, commands and methods for creating, editing, dimensioning, annotating and printing AutoCAD drawings.

Drawing organisation and inquiry commands

Altering objects

Working with layouts

2D drafting and Annotating

Dimensioning

Hatching objects

All computer-aided design courses are taught on PC computers.

Day Four – SketchUp

Program Overview, Interface and Settings

Settings PC vs MAC

Basic Techniques, Inferring, Good Sketch Up Habits, 2D/3D Environment, Navigating in Space

Edit Menu and Large Tool Set

Drawing a 2D plan from a survey

Drawing a 2D plan re-tracing a JPG

Push/Pull Tool : creating a 3D model from a 2D plan

Creating openings ( doors and windows ) using Tape Measure

Tool for creating Guidelines

Warehouse: importing furniture into your model

Locating furniture into your model: Scale - Rotate - Move

Rendering your model importing Sketch Up default materials and textures

Paint Bucket Tool

Day Five – SketchUp

Groups, Components, Outliner

Customising furniture imported from 3D Warehouse

Customising your model: importing clients fabrics and wallpapers

Creating skirting boards and cornices using Follow Me Tool

Reference Tools: Dimensions, Axes, Text

Printing and Output Options

Course Outcomes:

Understand the main interface of both Vectorworks and SketchUp

Gain experience in using these programmes in tandem in order to create a package of drawings.

This introductory-level course is open to applicants with an understanding of technical drawing skills and confident computer skills. All computer aided design courses are taught on PC computers." This course is taught by expert tutors who teach on the degree courses at KLC.
