Rod Nelson

Rod is a self-taught woodblock printmaker and has exhibited work in the UK, Germany and China. His mastery of technical skills has developed from many years working as a professional woodworker. He is co-author (with Merlyn Chesterman) of the book 'Making Woodblock Prints' and has enjoyed teaching for many years at West Dean and elsewhere.

Describe your approach to teaching:
There is a unique, vivid quality to woodcuts. Rod has an ability to help students to go beyond their self-imposed limitations to discover this quality - an exciting process for both student and teacher.

What inspires your work?
The power and freedom of expression possible in woodcut is its own inspiration. There is a sensuous beauty to the materials and an apparent simplicity of method which belies potential for great subtlety.
