Clive Bowen

Clive Bowen studied painting at Cardiff Art School. He has been making wood-fired slipware since 1971. His work is held in major public collections around the world and he holds regular exhibitions both in the UK and Japan. He teaches occasional short courses in the UK and abroad.

APPROACH TO TEACHING: I want to transmit an understanding of the essence of slipware. To this end, I try to teach true fluency in throwing and in the use of slip decoration.

INSPIRATION: My inspiration comes from the anonymous ethnic pots of all cultures and their feeling of life and freshness. My main preoccupation is always the function of the pieces.
