Andrew Whittle

Andrew Whittle is a letter cutter in stone, wood, and metal. Largely self-taught, he founded and ran the Letter Cutting course at Weymouth College for sixteen years as well as running workshops for Memorials by Artists and the European Lettering Institute. He has many public commissions and notably collaborated for years with Ian Hamilton Finlay.

How would you describe your approach to teaching?
I enjoy passing on techniques by demonstrating whilst explaining good design attitudes through example and discussion. Each student is given individual attention according to need.

What inspires your own work?
I take pleasure in adding to my knowledge of the history of Lettering and this combined with a thorough knowledge of the tools and materials is the basis of my inspiration.
