Collections

West Dean Gardens holds two large collections of Liriodendron (Tulip Tree) and Aesculus (Horse Chestnut Tree). Specimen trees can be seen throughout the Gardens and Arboretum.

Bulbs and Wildflowers

At different times of the year, throughout the gardens and arboretum, visitors can enjoy colourful and abundant displays of wildflowers.

Over previous years, over 500,000 bulbs have been planted throughout the gardens and aboretum, including Narcissi, Scilla, Lilies, Anenome, Muscari, Allium, Chinodoxia, Fritilleria, Crocus and Cyclamen. The wildflower lawns in the fruit garden utilise locally collected seed and provide spring beauty, while wildflower swards in the gardens and arboretum are in bloom in April/ May.
