Press Release: West Dean Gardens' Head Gardener wins New Talent Award at the Garden Media Guild Awards

Award-winning West Dean Gardens near Chichester, West Sussex are delighted to announce that their Head Gardener, Tom Brown, who joined West Dean earlier this year (May) has won the Alan Titchmarsh New Talent Award sponsored by Hayloft at the prestigious Garden Media Guild Awards, which were held at the Savoy Hotel, London on Thursday, November 21, 2019.

The Judges commented: “Tom Brown’s quiet passion and wide-ranging horticultural skills are evident in both his writing and presenting examples, and he has a subtle yet extremely engaging style. He’s an experienced, passionate plantsman and gardener. Tom brings his subjects to life both on the page and presented to camera. His love of plants shines throughout and it is a joy to read and watch material backed up by in- depth knowledge along with a great deal of hands- on experience. Tom Brown is the clear winner in the New Talent category.”

Tom Brown said:  “I was tremendously flattered to be shortlisted for this award and bowled over when I was announced the recipient. Although I have worked in gardens for many years, it's only recently that I have written for Gardens Illustrated and Gardener's World Magazine, being able to bring my passion for great, garden worthy plants into the consciousness of a wider audience. I hope this award will give me a platform to continue to share my passion for gardens and am excited to see what the future holds.”

Alex Barron, Chief Executive, West Dean College, noted: “Congratulations to our Head Gardener, Tom Brown. The beautiful West Dean Gardens are in safe hands for this next exciting phase of their evolution as the inspirational setting for West Dean College of Arts and Conservation.”
