Thomas Gontar

Thomas Gontar has been practicing as an artist blacksmith since 2013, working on a wide variety of projects including sculptural work, architectural work and furniture design. Thomas moved into Glynde Forge in May 2016, where he is now based. Thomas employs time honoured techniques to produce high quality work that showcases the best of traditional craftsmanship and his own contemporary aesthetic.

Approach to teaching

I’m a patient teacher, who gives students the opportunities to discover the challenges and intricacies of the medium while offering guidance, context and physical demonstrations of technique.

What inspires your own work?

The medium, first and foremost and blacksmithing’s long history of skilled creators. I’m inspired by recycled materials. I am currently using recycled steel and collaborating with local recycled plastic artists to create beautiful, contemporary, functional furniture.
