Subject Leader Conservation of Books and Library Materials
Sonja is an independent book conservator accredited by Icon with her own book conservation studio in London. Since 2010 she has been associate tutor on the book conservation programme at West Dean College. Sonja has worked in both the private and public sectors in the UK and the US including grant funded projects at the Oxford Conservation Consortium and the London Metropolitan Archives; rare book conservation at Etherington Conservation Services, North Carolina; and independent book conservation for the Wellcome Library, the National History Museum (London), the Royal College of Music and many other institutions. She studied conservation at Camberwell College of Arts, achieving an MA in Conservation in 2002, and trained and worked seven years with Elizabeth Neville ACR.
Her special interests range from board attachment techniques to paper bindings for rebinding to the making and history of stationery bindings to the history and general development of the book conservation profession to the cooperation between book conservators and small libraries.
Since being a conservation student Sonja has been engaged in the development of the book conservation profession, first as a member of the Institute of Paper Conservation and since 2006 on the committee of Icon's Book and Paper Group. She is a member of the Institute of Conservation (Icon), Internationale Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Archivs-, Bibliotheks- und Graphikrestauratoren (IADA), American Institute for Conservation (AIC), Guild of Bookworkers (GBW), Designer Bookbinders (DB) and Society of Bookbinders (SOB).
