Rachael South

Rachael South

Rachael South was taught chair caning by her father who had also learned from his father. She has been teaching for eight years and has original woven furniture on display at the Museum of London and is a member of the Basketmakers Association and a Yeoman of the Worshipful Company of Basketmakers.

Describe your approach to teaching.

My approach to teaching is very hands on. I like to introduce the students to the natural materials we will use and make them aware of how each type of material has unique qualities and how they can be used for weaving seats.

What inspires your own work?

I’m interested by the process of pattern making in the form of weaving, I also find all of the  natural materials used for seating challenging and inspiring.
