Laila Smith

Laila Smith is a studio jeweller and tutor. Her mathematically inspired geometric jewellery is sold across the UK. She trained at Manchester Metropolitan University and then undertook a 15 month Fellowship in The Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham. She has 17 years teaching experience, both in further, higher education and leisure classes.

Describe your approach to teaching:
My approach is to teaching is to show students techniques and then allow them to use these skills on pieces they love so allowing their personal taste and design to inform the pieces they create.

A love of mathematics and interest in geometry feeds into my work through the shapes and proportions of my pieces. I am never happier than when forming and soldering a new piece of work.
