Kate Wells

Kate is a textile artist/embroiderer with over 30 years exhibiting and teaching experience. Trained at Loughborough and Manchester (MA) early teaching included Glasgow School of Art and UK BA Embroidery Courses. An educational film of her process -'Handmade' (for Channel 4) - is still used widely in schools. Kate has regularly demonstrated her work at Art in Action.

My approach is about detailed looking and translating across the mediums of paperwork and textiles. I encourage thoughtful engagement and fine attention with a daring approach to machine embroidery.

My own embroidery is directly inspired by drawing and work on paper, from simple repetitive mark-making to illustrative images and collages. Recent work on the 'Irish' machine uses gold thread on finest silk and dissolvable fabrics to create beautiful rich contemporary lace.
