Jo Mabbutt

Jo's initial training was in wood graining, marbling, gilding and specialist paint finishes at Guildford College. She also gained a Cert. Ed. and taught in FE for 8 years. She up-skilled at Central St Martins and now balances being a designer/maker with teaching workshops and lecturing all over the country.

Describe your approach to teaching:
My approach to teaching is by demonstrating techniques using a wide range of media and then encouraging students to experiment and explore widely within an open and friendly environment.

What inspires your own work?
I often use intuitive exploration with materials which can result in unexpected textured and distressed surfaces. Creating contemporary surface treatments to commission is also challenging and exciting. I find other inspiration in contemporary textiles, jewellery and wallpaper, and collaborating with other designers is always very stimulating.
