James Napier

James Napier founded LARA (London Atelier of Representational Art) specialising in teaching traditional art techniques. Before LARA, James studied at Central St Martins, Charles Cecil Studios and Kingston University. James has exhibited in the Royal Society of Portrait Artists and his sculpture The Abandoned Soldier was erected in Trafalgar Square.

Approach to teaching

I aim to teach the grammar of drawing, including life drawing, using time tested art techniques. I believe helping a student understand these fundamentals will provide the tools to confidently explore their artistic journey.

What inspires your own work?

My inspiration spans from the contour drawings of Michelangelo to the natural forms of Henry Moore’s sculptures and freedom of Howard Hodgkins. Quality is to be admired in whatever medium.
