Abigail Brown

Abigail Brown has been producing contemporary designs in silverware since graduating from Loughborough University School of Art & Design in 2001.  She has since trained at Bishopsland Workshops in Oxfordshire and Edinburgh College of Art, and in recent years, has undergone training with many silversmiths including Rod Kelly and Michael Lloyd.

Her work has been exhibited internationally at venues including the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Saatchi Gallery, Goldsmiths’ Hall and the German Goldsmiths’ House in Hanau. Abigail’s silverware is widely collected and is included in the public collection of Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales in Cardiff.  In 2015 she was awarded the Bayerischer Staatspreis (Bavarian States Prize), and she has been awarded the Freedom of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths’ and the Freedom of the City of London for her work within the field of silversmithing.

Describe your approach to teaching.
I support students to explore their ideas and a range of silversmithing techniques in a friendly and creative atmosphere.  I teach techniques through practical demonstrations with an emphasis on encouraging students to have a go and to develop their own ideas.

What inspires your own work?
My current works connect through a process of observation and intuitive making.  I am involved and inspired by my environment and experiences and I work instinctively to create beautiful objects in silver.  The work is a direct result of my deeply rooted relationship with the land and is a celebration of form, material and elemental creativity.

Silver award
In early 2020, it was announced that Abigail Brown's 'Fogou' Vessel and Lichen Brooch won an award at the Goldsmiths' Craftsmanship & Design Awards. Her Lichen work won SILVER for the experimental use of the enamel to achieve the lifelike symbiotic plantform.
