Course Description

Discover how to use silk-screen printing techniques to produce multi-coloured designs. Using paper cut stencils and water-based inks, learn how to create rich and fascinating imagery.

Beginners and experienced artists alike can benefit from exploring this most versatile of printmaking techniques. Learn to create simple stencils using cut paper. Using opaque and transparent water based inks, you will create layered images of stunning colour and vibrancy.

This course is hands on and practical. After a short introductory session, where the techniques of setting up and printing on your tabletop workstation and using cut paper stencils are explained, you will embark on your own work with the guidance of the tutor. You can expect to achieve at least one finished multi-layered print together with some experimental and exploratory work.

On the first evening, the tutor will discuss any health and safety issues and give a brief introduction to silk-screen printing and its possibilities as a medium. You will be looking at the subject matter and there will be a practice session, demonstrating how to set up and print on your silk-screen printing workstation using paper stencil techniques.

Day one: Exploring the imagery, deciding on the colours, cutting paper stencils, colour mixing, practising the technique of stencilling with the silk-screen. Experimenting. Starting the first image.

Day two: Building up a layered image. Completing and finishing off.

Timetable

Arrival Day - this is the first date listed above

Courses start early evening. Residential students to arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm.

6.45pm: Welcome, followed by dinner (included).

8 - 9pm: First teaching session, attendance is essential.

Daily timetable

Classes 9.15 - 5pm, lunch is included.

From 6.30pm: Dinner (included for residential students).

Evening working - students may have access to workshops until 9pm, but only with their tutor's permission and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.

Last day

Classes 9.15am - 3pm, lunch is included.

Residential students are to vacate their rooms by 10am please.

Course Materials

Included

  • The course fee includes the cost of providing heavyweight, good quality cartridge paper (A2), inks and sundries.

What students need to bring

  • Work clothes – printing and cleaning up can be messy
  • Students should bring images and ideas as inspiration. These could include sketch books, photographs or found images in books or magazines. It is useful to have a general art kit including pencils, brushes, scissors, craft knife or scalpel, ruler etc.

  • General art materials such as pencils, rulers, rubbers, brushes, sellotape, masking tape, scalpel, craft knife, scissors, brown packaging tape, paper (A2 heavy weight 220gms smooth surface), newsprint.
Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio, this includes stout covered footwear (no sandals or open toes).

Tutors

Jane Sampson

Jane is a a graduate of Exeter University and the Barber institute Birmingham University. She has researched printmaking for Brighton University and is well known for her teaching both there and at her own studio Inkspot Press. She frequently exhibits at the Affordable Art Fair in London and Printfest in Cumbria, and won the John Purcell prize at the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers in London. Her work is in private and corporate collections, at The Mappin Art Gallery and at the Printmakers Council.
