About this course

Learn how to paint using traditional methods and materials. Gain an understanding of composition, under-drawing, glazing and optical mixes using mineral pigments on gessoed panels.

Course Description

This course will excite and familiarise you with a painting technique that’s had less restoration than any other in art. It will de-mystify some of the tried and tested methods of egg tempera painting. These methods have been used and adapted by artists such as Michelangelo, Sandro Botticelli, those of the Nineteenth Century Revival, through to Andrew Wyeth, Leonora Carrington, Frieda Kahlo, Picasso and contemporary international artists. Through a series of guided exercises you will complete a small egg tempera painting. Pigments, palettes, a practice panel and studio equipment are all supplied.

Your course begins with a short introductory talk, followed by step-by-step exercises to familiarise you with the medium on a supplied practice panel using prepared pigments. You will enhance your subject matter by learning about composition, under-drawing, mixing pigments in correct proportions with egg, making form through glazing, optical mixes and layering brush strokes.

You will continue with these exercises and transfer your subject matter with skills gained onto a gessoed panel of your choice. The tutor will set up a still life subject to paint, or you are welcome to paint from your own sketches or subject matter. The course will continue with both group and individual tuition to develop your painting skills and to enable you to produce a painting that suits your imagery.

By the end of the course, you will have gained knowledge and familiarity to enjoy this beautiful medium, complemented by historic references. You will be given course notes and a list of suppliers, plus information on how to continue painting at home as not too much equipment is required.

Arrival Day - this is the first date listed above

Courses start early evening. Residential students to arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm.

6.45pm: Welcome, followed by dinner (included).

8 - 9pm: First teaching session, attendance is essential.

Daily timetable

Classes 9.15 - 5pm, lunch is included.

From 6.30pm: Dinner (included for residential students).

Evening working - students may have access to workshops until 9pm, but only with their tutor's permission and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.

Last day

Classes 9.15am - 3pm, lunch is included.

Residential students are to vacate their rooms by 10am please.

  • The course fee includes the cost of providing materials shared amongst the group including pigments, charcoal and distilled water and a practice gessoed panel for each student.

What students need to bring

  • One dozen fresh free range farmhouse eggs (not supermarket)
  • Additional water jars, rigger brushes, sketching materials, suitable clothing
  • If you wish you can bring preparatory sketches, photographs or additional subject matter. Otherwise you can decide during the course from a choice of still life objects, to inspire you.

  • On this course the tutor/College will supply most of the materials. There will be an additional charge for a gessoed panel on which you will paint your finished piece. This charge should be paid to the tutor before the end of the course, by cash or cheque. More panels will be available, prices vary depending on size from £10 to £35 per gessoed panel.
