On this course we will work from both observation and imagination.
Drawing with ink and a brush is an ancient form of art that originated in China many centuries ago, and has continued to be a medium of choice for many contemporary artists such as AR Penck, Alan Davie, Gill Button, Raymond Pettibon, Miroco Machiko, Richard Diebenkorn.
Through exercises you will experiment with a variety of drawing applicators, including brush, dip pen, sponge, sticks and more to create confident mark-making. You will explore approaches to working with ink on different papers, including mixing with water to create washes, experimenting with colour and being spontaneous in your creative approach. You will learn how to both control the medium as well as allowing the ink to take its own course. Working from both observation and imagination, you will gain confidence in creating personal and individual imagery. The sessions will be supported by demonstrations, individual and group tutorials and discussion.
By the end of the course, you will have gained confidence to explore your own creative ideas more freely, sharpened your awareness of the possibilities of the medium, and feel ‘loosened-up’ so that you are able to continue using ink with courage at home.
