Revolutionise how you use a sketchbook. Make and complete sketchbooks to help you see, think and learn. Explore a variety of innovative techniques to create short extraordinary sketchbooks based on mini projects.Course Description
This course will revolutionise how you use sketchbooks – seeing them as not a scary set of empty pages, but as a useful tool and in some cases, a final object or piece of work. You will discover ways of filling the sketchbooks through looking at themes, how to start them and work though them without losing interest.
You will explore a variety of techniques to create a library of sketchbooks from single folded sheets to collapsing sculpture books. You will be looking at sketchbooks in the broadest of terms and will learn new ways to fill the books using various methods from collage to cutting, alongside exploring ways to use the materials differently. Demonstrations will be given with a short brief.

Arrival Day - this is the first date listed above
Courses start early evening. Residential students to arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm.
6.45pm: Welcome, followed by dinner (included).
8 - 9pm: First teaching session, attendance is essential.
Daily timetable
Classes 9.15 - 5pm, lunch is included.
From 6.30pm: Dinner (included for residential students).
Evening working - students may have access to workshops, but only with their tutor's permission and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.
Last day
Classes 9.15am - 3pm, lunch is included.
Residential students are to vacate their rooms by 10am please.

Course Materials

- The College will supply most of the materials, including:
- 2 sheets A5 220gsm cartridge paper
- 5 sheets A3 220gsm cartridge paper
- 6 sheets A2 220gsm cartridge paper
- 3 sheets A4 tracing paper
- Paperclip
- 1 x red/blue double ended pencil crayon
- 4 Winsor and Newton inks (yellow, red, blue and Indian ink black) small pots
- 1 black HB conte compressed charcoal
- 1 x white chalk or pastel
- 1 x tapestry needle (fits embroidery thread)
- 1 x embroidery thread any colour
- 3 x semi-transparent paper envelopes
What students need to bring
- Notepad, apron, scissors, ruler, selection of twigs from outside, cardboard box (easy to cut) – from packaging or a delivery, a box – shoe box or similar size for collecting items, string or ribbon, any collage material including old stamps and images you would like to use.
- Plus any items you may have from the available to buy list.

- Pencil, black pen, 1 thin/fine watercolour brush, 1 thick watercolour brush (1 inch approx), Pritt stick or paper glue, masking tape (optional), craft knife.
Tutors
DACC Core Team Tutor and Short Course Tutor
Freya trained at Edinburgh College of Art and UAL. She has received residencies from The Royal Scottish Academy, Scottish Arts Council, The Florence Trust, Somerset House, West Dean College and The National Trust. She exhibits regularly in the UK and abroad. Freya is currently undertaking a PhD at the Royal College of Art, examining the role of fine art portraiture within narrative medicine.
