Mandy will talk you through the challenges of composition and using colour and show you how to layer and attach. She will demonstrate a selection of embroidery stitches and how she uses them in her own work to create surface decoration and sometimes text. The objective is to encourage you to build up your own visual language through stitch.
The course begins on the first evening with an introductory illustrated talk about Mandy’s textile art practice. She will show you inspirational examples of her work which ranges across the application of textile collage techniques on to garments, in stitched book forms and collage making using vintage materials. She will talk about her personal textile journey, how she gets her ideas and studio life.
On Saturday you will start the day by deconstructing a piece of old quilt. The aim is to produce an unusual collection of time-worn fabrics which will provide you with the starting point for the build up of a textile collage. Into this you will mix your own collection of special vintage materials with the aim of creating a resolved piece at the end of the day which will have personal resonance. You might like to work on in the studio on Saturday night after dinner to finish your piece.
On Sunday you will again use vintage materials but the outcome will be a small fabric book. You will be shown a number of possible book structures and will choose one to work with. All will present different challenges as you build on the collage techniques with the aim to create pages and a stitched journal. The course concludes with a group review of work made.
