About this course

Learn some of Adobe Photoshop's creative features and discover how to make enhancements to your images using many of the software's primary adjustment features. This will include working with layers, layer masks, tools and filters, while experimenting with your own images.

Course Description

It is ideal if you have little or no knowledge of Photoshop CC. In this step-by-step guide through the basics, using a PC based Photoshop CC in the College's digital suite.

After gaining an understanding of a selection of creative tools and filters, you then moving onto more intermediate processes of adjustment layers, layer masks, and creative filters.

The course starts with processes that show the fundamentals of image enhancements in its basic form including photo re-touching and repair. Demonstrations by the tutor will be followed by individual practice. Develop your knowledge at your own pace as you move from basic to more intermediate and learn to master photo-image techniques with your own digital files to give you the confidence to use Photoshop CC as an everyday tool.


Arrival Day - this is the first date listed above

Courses start early evening. Residential students to arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm.

6.45pm: Welcome, followed by dinner (included).

8 - 9pm: First teaching session, attendance is essential.

Daily timetable

Classes 9.15 - 5pm, lunch is included.

From 6.30pm: Dinner (included for residential students).

Evening working - students may have access to workshops, but only with their tutor's permission and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.

Last day

Classes 9.15am - 3pm, lunch is included.

Residential students are to vacate their rooms by 10am please.

Course Materials

What students need to bring

  • You should prepare and bring your own digital images, ideally on a USB/memory stick. Digital camera cards can also be used with the appropriate reader, or by using the computers onboard card reader ports, raw files can be used within Photoshop, but some camera manufactures require additional software, so it is advisable to keep file types as normal Tiff, Jpeg, or Psd files.
  • It is a good idea to select images of a range of subjects - e.g. landscapes, perspective shots, buildings, people and portraits, close-ups, skies, monuments, still life, These can be good quality images, not just those needing improvement.
  • Digital images to work on stored on CD-R or USB memory stick/drives/portable hard drive
  • Bring your own digital camera (optional) if you wish to take some photographs during breaks to work on later together with the relevant downloading software, camera/computer leads, fresh batteries/charger etc. and cameral manual .
  • Also bring your preferred media e.g. USB memory stick /portable hard drive to save work at the end of the course etc. (Prints are not made as part of the course)

Please note: It is essential that have computer skills and own or have access to Photoshop CC. If you are aiming to use Photoshop applications for design (ie. non-photography) please see one of our alternative courses which cover these specific areas.


Beytan Erkmen

Beytan began his career as a studio portrait photographer in 1990. Throughout his career he has produced images for companies in fashion, hair and beauty, theatre production and performing arts and has been published internationally. More recent projects within education, leisure and product industries, have allowed Beytan to show his creativity and flare. In 2009-2012 he gained a MFA Masters of Fine Art Photography Degree at University of Creative Arts, Farnham. After more than 20 years, his enthusiasm, passion and dedication for photography, is still as fresh as the day he was given his first camera.
