About this course

Learn how to capture expressions of people through observing anatomy. Make accurate drawings that show movement and character.

Course Description

Learn how to capture the expressions and gestures of people with accuracy. Through observing the anatomy of each body part make accurate drawings that show movement and character.

Draw hands, feet and faces freely and accurately in relation to the figure and its surroundings. Improve your way of looking and seeing the human extremeties of hands, feet and faces. Focusing on expression you will learn how to translate the figurative shapes into two-dimensions on paper.

On the first evening you will be introduced to the course, model and studio environment. The tutor will introduce first exercises and give a personal detailed description of the programme.

Through a series of exercises on tone, line and shape you will learn how to capture the essence of expression and movement with accuracy and confidence. You will also learn how to successfully deal with foreshortening in your drawing.

Referring to anatomical imagery you will observe the bone and muscle structures of each subject, which will inform your understanding of these two bodily systems, how they relate to each other and how this affects your composition. This will help you to depict the intricate exteriors of hands, feet and faces in different expressive gestures.

The tutor will demonstrate methods of mark making with simple materials including pencil, graphite, chalk, rubber and charcoal, which will help to broaden your artistic vocabulary and help you to draw with sensitivity, confidence and personal expression.

By the end of the course you will have completed a diverse portfolio of drawings using different techniques. You will have gained knowledge and confidence in drawing the three expressive parts of the body that add character and meaning to your figure drawings. You will also have developed your skills in observation, and knowledge of the different systems inside the body that affect and improve your drawing in dynamic ways.
