About this course

Create a personalised chain link silver bracelet and make four to eight charms to start your bracelet. You will learn jump ring formation and practice your soldering skills making a chain and then progress to create personalised charms, relating to special places, memories, names or dates. You will be introduced to a number of construction techniques through samples and tutor demonstrations. Intermediate/Advanced students will be able to explore further techniques such as simple stone settings and casting.

Course Description

After an introductory talk and display of a number of examples you will begin by creating your chosen chain to make into the bracelet. You will learn jump ring formation and practice your soldering skills. Once your bracelets are made you will progress to create your personalised charms. You will be introduced to a number of different construction techniques through samples and tutor demonstrations.

By creating charms that refer to places or personal items and using letters or names and dates your bracelet will be individual to you or the lucky recipient. Intermediate/Advanced students will be able to explore even more techniques such as simple stone settings and casting methods.

Everyone will leave with a truly unique and personalised charm bracelet.

Timetable

Arrival Day - this is the first date listed above

Courses start early evening. Residential students to arrive from 4pm, non-residential students to arrive by 6.45pm.

6.45pm: Welcome, followed by dinner (included).

8 - 9pm: First teaching session, attendance is essential.

Daily timetable

Classes 9.15 - 5pm, lunch is included.

From 6.30pm: Dinner (included for residential students).

Evening working - students may have access to workshops, but only with their tutor's permission and provided any health and safety guidelines are observed.

Last day

Classes 9.15am - 3pm, lunch is included.

Residential students are to vacate their rooms by 10am please.

Included

  • Silver wire to make the bracelet and silver for a number of charms.

What students need to bring

  • Any silver or gold wire or sheet, or old gold jewellery that you may be able to reuse
  • Jewellery tools
  • Small sentimental items such as buttons etc (these may not be used so it isn't an issue if you don't bring but they may help for ideas for your charms)

Available to buy

  • Additional silver wire and sheet can be purchased from the shop after discussion with your tutor
  • Copper and brass wire and sheet for samples and experimentation
  • Small stones and silver fastenings

Tutors

Laila Smith

Laila Smith is a studio jeweller and tutor. Her mathematically inspired geometric jewellery is sold across the UK. She trained at Manchester Metropolitan University and then undertook a 15 month Fellowship in The Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham. She has 17 years teaching experience, both in further, higher education and leisure classes.
